Retriever of Souls

Editorial illustration for Orion Magazine short nonfiction story about Ruby, a girl suffering from nocturnal epilepsy and her service dog Hachi, narrated by the loving voice of the girl’s mother Amy.

In my image I played with scale and overlapping shapes to create a narrative where the black Labrador is portrayed as its owner’s silent protector, a gentle guardian of sleep. On the outside of this safe space there is a forest on fire, a recurring metaphor used in the story when referring to the girl’s brain when a seizure takes place. Looking closely enough, one can see the silhouette of the girl running from the flames, guided by her dog that shows her the way back to her body, where she is safe.
